The next time you give your children money, realize that the receiving is in the giving. There’s nothing more to receive than that. If you touch it again, it’s hot! The receiving is in the moment you give it. That’s all you get. It’s over. If you have one expectation one desire for them to be grateful, you lose the gift. Love is an impulsive act. It’s free. It’s the story you tell about it afterward that’s your poverty. My generosity is what’s mine; the story you tell about it has no effect on me. What does that have to do with me? But my gift—that’s what I receive. Attaching to these insane stories, without investigation, is how you cost yourself the gift that you are —Byron Katie.
